Laugh and Learn: learn from the worst musical bloopers

Laughter is the best medicine, and an excellent teacher. Laugh and learn while you explore these 9 pieces of performance and career advice. All that extra laughter is good for the chop muscles too!

1. Always bring tissue. It could be seasonal allergies, it could be the seasonal cold, and some paranormal experts might suggest an ancestor has crossed your path... Be prepared for that surprise attack sneeze on your next gig!

2. Don't let the competition kill you. It's important to bring your A-game to every performance, but know when it is time to take a step back and your final bow.

3. Own your solo. Approach every solo opportunity like the rock star you are.

4. Who said music wasn't athletic? This is a full contact sport, not suggested for the faint of heart. Don't forget to pack your valve oil, slide grease, mutes, and first aid kit for your next rehearsal

5. Creativity Counts. Score study, listening to a variety of recordings, and lots of section practice will help you understand the orchestral composition so well, you will be able to enrich the context of your current music with the memories and experiences of other similar music. Just make sure you have an understanding conductor before you start "re-contextualizing" at your next rehearsal.

6. Every audience member counts. You might not have the audience you want, but every audience member is important and deserves your best performance.

7. Practice makes prepared, not perfect. Don't be discouraged by those unpredictable events that can only happen during your first performance. Just keep on playing and rest firmly on you solid preparation.

8. Check your Key Signature. Unfortunately, playing in the wrong key or key signature cannot be hidden even by the coolest moves and flashiest clothes.

9. Trumpet players - If you must have a high note contest.... be respectful of those in close proximity.
